01
Level 1
Best for fireplace systems with no change under continued service. The inspector checks for basic soundness to ensure the system functions properly and has no blockages or buildup.
02
Level 2
Best for changes to a fireplace system or during the sale or transfer of a property. The inspection includes everything in the Level 1 inspection plus additional accessible areas of the chimney. The inspector uses a video scanner to examine internal areas. This is required when you sell or purchase a home with an existing fireplace and chimney system.
03
Level 3
Best for examination of concealed parts of the chimney when the Level 1 or Level 2 inspections indicate a need for further investigation. Level 3 inspections can include the removal of certain components of the chimney for a more detailed evaluation.
How Often Should You Schedule a Chimney Inspection?
Chimney systems and appliances require an annual inspection.
The National Fire Protection Agency provides the standards for chimneys, fireplaces, vents, and solid fuel-burning appliances. NFPA 211 sets the standard for annual inspections.
An annual inspection and cleaning keep your chimney in top shape. It’s the best way to maintain your chimney for the burning season and prevent chimney fires. Even if you rarely use your fireplace, you still need an annual inspection.
When Do You Need a Fireplace Inspection?
As we stated, fireplaces require annual inspections. However, any change in the status of the fireplace requires an inspection. This includes positive changes, like remodels and renovations. But, negative circumstances, like a fire, flooding, or structural damage, also require an inspection.
We recommend a chimney inspection before you purchase a home and especially before you use a fireplace for the first time after buying a property.

What Types of Fireplaces Need Inspection?
If you use a fireplace at all, it needs an annual inspection. This includes gas fireplaces. Manufacturers of natural and gas-burning appliances recommend the annual inspection and cleaning of all their products. Annual inspections and cleanings help your gas fireplace run more efficiently and safely.
